Assessments and Therapy

At Counseling India, Testing and Assessment need not take time away from learning; assessments can be learning experiences in themselves.

Enumerated below are some of the assessments that we use at Counseling India. The assessments help the client and us to understand the client better, arrive at the right diagnosis and ensure that the counseling begins on the right path.

CPC: The Children’s Problems Checklist is completed by the parent or guardian of children in the 5-12 age range. The checklist consists of 190 items which survey 11 problem areas: emotions, self-concept, peers/play, school, language-thinking, concentration-organization, activity level-motor control, behavior, values, habits, and health.

APC: Adolescent Problem Checklist is filled out by the teenager between the ages of 13-17. It is a self-report intake form to understand what the adolescent thinks about his psychological, social and behavioral issues as well as cognitive status. This form combined with a parental interview and clinical observation of the client leads to efficient diagnostication and effective therapeutic intervention.

Learning Disability Screening: Learning disabilities, or learning disorders, are an umbrella term for a wide variety of learning problems. A learning disability is not a problem with intelligence or motivation. Kids with learning disabilities aren’t lazy or dumb. In fact, most are just as smart as everyone else. Their brains are simply wired differently. This difference affects how they receive and process information. This test screens children suspected of having a learning disability. It includes review of student work and educational records, observation and interview, developmental and social history, fine and gross motor evaluation, adaptive behavior, ADL functioning etc.

Other assessments done at Counseling India include but are not limited to:

Conners Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scales

Autism Spectrum Disorder screening using CARS and DSM IV

Vineland Scale of Social Maturity

Different therapies used in the center for counseling

Behavior therapy: The foundation of this therapy is that behaviors are learned and that our environment plays a huge role in it. It believes that behavior is learned through reinforcement and imitation and hence abnormal or maladaptive behaviors are a result of defective learning.

Rational-emotive therapy and Cognitive-behavioral therapy: This therapy springs from the concept that all human beings are capable of rational thought. The external environment makes them fall victim to irrational thinking, which in turn could lead to neurosis. The therapy says that the client’s problems are rooted in childhood and in their core belief system which was formed at that time.
